In celebration of the United States’ Bicentennial, Peter Max Paints America is officially published. At the White House, King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, joined by Peter Max, presents the book—a vibrant collection of Max’s paintings and collages—to President Gerald Ford on behalf of Sweden as a gesture of goodwill.
That same evening, upon returning to New York City from the historic event, Max is inspired by the celebration's significance and begins painting the Statue of Liberty. This creative spark marks the beginning of his annual July 4th Statue of Liberty painting tradition. Reflecting on this ritual, Max shares, “I wanted to honor this amazing democracy that the Statue of Liberty symbolizes.” Decades later, his tradition continues, serving as a lasting tribute to freedom and hope.
