About: Paul Jenkins (1923–2012) was an American painter best known for his Phenomena series, which captivated audiences with its bold colors and fluid compositions. Employing a unique pouring technique, Jenkins skillfully balanced chance and control, manipulating paint flow by adjusting the canvas angle and pressing from behind. His works were titled with the word Phenomena followed by phrases that captured his personal interpretation, such as Phenomena: Mistral Veil, inspired by the northern Mediterranean wind. Jenkins drew inspiration from Goethe’s color theories and natural phenomena, including the stark beauty of a shark’s fin cutting through water, which he described as “beauty harboring latent violence.” His vibrant palettes were influenced by Turner’s luminous reflections of nature and Georges de La Tour’s dramatic contrasts of light and shadow.
