About: Roberto Sebastián Antonio Matta Echaurren, known as Matta, is renowned as a key figure in Surrealism and for his pivotal influence on Abstract Expressionism, inspiring artists like Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Mark Rothko, and Robert Motherwell. His work, marked by dynamic, complex spaces, reflects his fascination with the fluctuating energy of the universe and his rejection of a single perspective. Over time, Matta incorporated social commentary into his art through figurative imagery.  His first solo exhibition was at the Julian Levy Gallery in New York in 1940. Since then, nearly 400 solo exhibitions have showcased his work, including a major retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art in 1957.
