About:  Ellen Berkenblit is a celebrated contemporary artist recognized for her expressive, vibrant portrayals of women and animals. Known for her bold, gestural style, she often works on a large scale in oil paint, capturing the fantastical essence of her characters. Berkenblit’s work features a recurring, enigmatic female figure—typically with exaggerated, cartoonish features like long lashes, flushed cheeks, and untamed hair. Since her first solo exhibition in 1984, she’s showcased her work widely, including at Anton Kern Gallery in NYC, Michael Benevento in LA, and Charim Klocker Gallery in Vienna.

Born in Paterson, NJ, Berkenblit earned her BFA from Cooper Union in 1980. Her work is held in esteemed public collections, such as MoMA in New York, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014, her impact on contemporary painting continues to grow, making her a powerful force in modern art.
