About: Roberto Matta (1911–2002) was a leading Surrealist whose visionary style helped shape Abstract Expressionism. Known for his cosmic landscapes and dynamic, multidimensional spaces, Matta influenced artists like Pollock, Rothko, and Gorky. Matta held his first solo show in New York in 1940, and his art has since been featured in nearly 400 solo exhibitions worldwide, including a major retrospective at MoMA in 1957.
